Peter F. Drucker: If there is a father of 20th century management, it is Peter Drucker, born in 1909. While Drucker prefers to be known as a writer, both practicing managers and business

Dear Aspirant,
As you all know Civil Services mains examination is the most crucial stage of the IAS examination because it carries a huge weightage in term of total tally of marks and after changed pattern of IAS Mains Syllabus candidates are getting more confused. As the mains examination is subjective in nature, so candidates have to develop a proper Writing Strategy to get good marks in the examination. Writing skills (packaging) matter a lot in the Civil Services. Most of the candidates appearing for the Mains examination have a lot of knowledge, but lack writing skills. They are not able to present all the information/knowledge in a coherent and logical manner, as expected by the examiner. It is not only what you write, that is important, but also how you write and what you write, also matters a lot.

You are not Getting your Money's Worth

Don't you think it's funny that students pay around Rs 60000/- for coaching classes and they don't do & get what they ultimately have to do or get, i.e. WRITING PRACTICE? Coaching classes also mint money by conducting mock exams or so called 'TEST SERIES' and students pay around 6000 to 12000/- again. So please understand this simple thing - The main exam is not reading comprehension exams where you need to read big paragraphs and write one line answer but it's a exam where you need to read only one line questions and WRITE pages together.

Ideal Strategy

In preparing for any (Main) exam there are basically three things which ultimately aspirants are expected to do READ, REVISE and RECALL. Triple R strategy. But for putting this Strategy on paper you will have to adapt only one strategy and it is PRACTICE, PRACTICE & PRACTICE.

Practicing with sample papers/Previous year papers not only helps improve your writing skill, but also enhances your speed and ability of quick mental calculation. Make sure that you study as per the syllabus of the subjects chosen by you. For developing the writing skills, one should keep writing model answers while preparing for the Mains examination. This would help the candidate to "get into the groove" of writing under time pressure in the Mains examination. The attitude should never be "I will directly write in the examination".

Developing Writing Skill

Develop and follow your own style of writing. Try not to be repetitive and maintain a flow in the style of your writing. Never try to imitate others in the style of writing. Sequential and systematic style of answering comes after a lot of practice and analysis of standard answers. Try to stimulate the actual examination hours to judge your performance and to plug any loopholes. The bottom line is your study strategy should devote more time for WRITING than for reading alone. WRITE MORE than you read.

You should be able to visualise this - in main exam, as you have to write nearly 2500 words for 250 marks.
